2장의 빌보드 넘버원 앨범과 1곡의 넘버원 싱글을 보유한 포스트그런지(post-grunge) 밴드

크리드(Creed)는 1990년대 후반 미국에서 가장 많은 인기를 얻은 락밴드 중 하나로 꼽혔다.

밴드의 간판이기도 한 싱어 스캇 스탭(Scott Stapp)이 엄격한 성직자 집안에서 자랐다는 사실을

입증하듯, 꽤나 건전한 메시지를 신실한 사운드에 얹은 이들의 음악은 과연 대중에게 무리없이

먹혀드는 것이었다. 1995년 플로리다에서 스캇 스탭과 마크 트레몬티(Mark Tremonti. 기타)가

의기투합하며 그 기초가 닦인 크리드는, 얼마후 브라이언 마샬(Brian Marshall. 베이스)과

스캇 필립스(Scott Phillips. 드럼)를 영입하며 4인조 체제를 완성하게 된다.

1997년 이들은 데뷔앨범 [My Own Prison]을 녹음해 자신들이 독자적으로 설립한 인디레이블을

통해 배급하기 시작했는데, 이 앨범의 가능성에 주목한 와인드업(Wind-Up) 레이블이 크리드와 계약을

체결하면서 [My Own Prison]은 순식간에 인디 앨범에서 메이저 배급작으로 변신하게 된다.

어디 그뿐이랴, ‘What's This Life For’가 빌보드의 ‘Mainstream Rock Tracks’ 차트 1위를

차지하자 이들은 단박에 주목받는 신인밴드의 위치로 격상되는 행운을 맞았다.

500만장 이상의 판매고를 올린 [My Own Prison]의 성공이 채 잊혀지기도 전인 1999년,
크리드의 서포모어 앨범 [Human Clay]가 빌보드 앨범차트에 1위로 데뷔했다는 소식이 들려오게 된다.

[Human Clay]에서는 ‘Higher’와 ‘With Arms Wide Open’ 등의 히트싱글이 배출되기도 했는데,

특히 ‘With Arms Wide Open’은 크리드 최초의 빌보드 팝싱글차트 1위곡으로 기록되었다.

화려한 성공이 이어지던 2000년, 브라이언 마샬이 팀을 떠나는 상황을 맞게 된 크리드는

곧 브렛 헤슬라(Brett Hestla)를 새 멤버로 맞아들이고 투어를 돌게 된다.

그러나 정작 2001년, 3집 [Weathered]를 녹음할 당시에는 마크 트레몬티가 베이스 연주까지

도맡게 된다. 비록 밴드의 라인업은 3인조로 축소되었지만, [Weathered]가 전작에 이어 앨범차트 1위로

데뷔했다는 소식은 이들의 막강한 인기가 여전함을 증명하는 대목이기도 했다.

2002년 스캇 스탭이 교통사고를 당하며 잠시 위기를 맞기도 했던 크리드는, 스탭이 회복한 이후 여느때와 같이 투어를 돌며 정상적인 활동을 전개하였으나 2004년 6월 결국 해산을 결의하게 된다.
